Mayzon is one of the most recognized names in home and bath manufacturing, known widely by retailers as an innovator in its space. But in categories where Mayzon didn’t hold the majority of business, their full market picture was lacking: competitive sales data was incomplete, Amazon was a blind spot, and decisions that could have been made with real shopper data weren’t.
They turned to YipitData to fill in the gaps. With full category visibility across retailers, channels, and Amazon, Mayzon’s insights team could see where business was leaking, what consumers were buying instead, and where the white space was.
This brought a brand new product from Mayzon: a wraparound tension window rod that filled a gap no one in the market had addressed. A product that is now at Walmart.
The challenge: No visibility where it mattered most
Mayzon makes products that consumers encounter every day: shower rods, curtain liners, window rods, and more. They’re market leaders in many of these categories, but market leadership in some places doesn’t solve for visibility in others.
In categories where Mayzon held 100% of a retailer’s business, their POS data showed them what was selling and what wasn’t. But in shared categories, that data only showed Mayzon’s own performance, which left gaps in their understanding of the full market. To fill in those gaps, the team looked at indirect signals like planogram consistency, estimated shelf space, and how widely certain colorways were stocked. While helpful, these indicators were more proxies than answers.
Amazon was another blind spot. Bestseller rankings gave Mayzon’s team directional insight, but they couldn’t be translated into actual share or leakage, making it difficult to understand true performance or consumer behavior.
For Mayzon’s insights team, this was a big constraint. In categories where Mayzon was looking to deliver new innovations and not just service existing business, not knowing what was happening on Amazon meant some opportunities were still waiting to be found.
The opportunity became clear when a YipitData representative sent a screenshot of sample shopper data and asked them: Can you see this with your current tools? Mayzon happened to have a large majority of the business, so they could validate it. The data was accurate. So when a conversation about investing in market intelligence inevitably came up, VP of Marketing & Consumer Experience Mariel Brandi put YipitData forward — because she had already seen what the data could do.
The solution: A complete, predictive view of the market
Mayzon evaluated multiple data providers before choosing YipitData. The deciding factor for her was YipitData’s coverage. Mayzon operates across both textiles and hard goods, which are two distinct product worlds that most data solutions didn’t cover equally. Partial coverage wasn’t useful, since it would have resurfaced the same blind spots they were trying to eliminate. But YipitData offered coverage across both.
Once live, the platform gave Mayzon’s team, including Director of Consumer Market Insights Rory Vandermark, the ability to answer questions they couldn’t have before. That meant seeing which Amazon products were drawing shoppers away from Walmart’s assortment and quantifying the “size of the prize” before committing to another innovation.
And it meant that, when Mayzon’s insights team identified an opportunity, they could walk into a line review confidently. That difference mattered to Rory:
“YipitData leads us to the well, and then our team strategically figures out how to pull the water out.” — Rory Vandermark
This new level of rigor carried into Mayzon’s innovation. Product development decisions on color, finish, and sizing were now anchored in real shopper data — not only trends. And its sales team, now equipped with near real-time market intelligence, could enter retailer meetings with a deeper level of insight than before. As Mariel put it:
“YipitData helps you make data-backed decisions on what products to show when you have line reviews or you're developing for your own lines. It didn’t tell us what to do, but using YipitData, we came up with this brand new innovation.” — Mariel Brandi
The impact: A product that didn’t exist, now at Walmart
Results at a glance:
- Complete white space filled; no tension wraparound rod existed in the market before
- Product color, finish, and sizing validated with YipitData market data
- Walmart turns to Mayzon for category leakage and white space validation
- New Walmart US placement secured
The clearest indicator of what changes with better data was that Mayzon spotted a product opportunity no one else in the market had seen.
YipitData showed a white space in Walmart’s window rod assortment. Consumers looking for a wraparound rod were finding it on Amazon, where a lower price point drill-in version was pulling business away. Walmart carried a drill-in option of their own, but a tension version (at that price point) didn't exist anywhere in the market.
Mayzon saw the leakage and connected it to a consumer trend they were already watching: the shift away from homeownership. More consumers renting meant more demand for no-drill solutions and that tension hardware was a growing category. Mayzon had been innovating in this space for years. They held patents on shower rod tension mechanisms, and they knew how to make it work.
So they built a wraparound tension window rod that filled a complete white space. It was validated with consumer surveys, sized and finished based on YipitData’s market intelligence, and they pitched it to Walmart. Walmart said yes.
For Mariel, the win validated something bigger than a single product launch:
"YipitData filled the gaps where we didn't have the majority of the business. For the first time, we could see the full picture, prioritize where to focus, size the opportunity, and know exactly where we had room to grow." — Mariel Brandi
The rod secured new placement in Walmart US stores and is already live in Walmart Canada. And Mayzon — a company not yet a market leader in the window category — entered those line reviews with the knowledge of one.
Looking ahead: Building an even faster innovation engine
The window rod story is one that Mayzon expects to be the first of many.
Their immediate goal is proving the Walmart US placement at scale, which has strong enough sell-through to earn a chain-wide expansion. But Mayzon’s broader goal is what their insights and marketing teams are already working on: using YipitData to continuously identify where business is leaking, where white space exists, and where their next innovation lies before competitors can see it.
There’s also a new capability in play. Mayzon recently began exploring YipitData’s Insights Agent — an AI tool designed to make it faster and easier to extract decisions from large volumes of market data. For an insights team that runs lean, the promise is significant. As Mariel explained:
"When you invest in data, you need a team that can process it all, and that's a lot. YipitData's Insights Agent lowers that barrier. It makes it easier to imagine doing more with even a leaner team." — Mariel Brandi
Rory added on to Mariel’s note about the Insight Agent:
“YipitData is the science, and the art is what your team does with it. Their Insights Agent makes that science more accessible, so we can make smarter decisions and push our teams to be the best innovators that they can be.” — Rory Vandermark
The window rod story proved what’s possible when the right data and an innovative team align around retail strategy, especially as Mayzon scales its model across more categories and retail partners.
