Despite rocky market conditions in 2022, wholesale club retailers have driven sustained YoY growth between 10% to 22% over the past 18 months. Costco leads the wholesale retailer pack, with both its online and offline sales outpacing peers BJ’s and Sam’s Club. Moreover, the retailer has steadily increased both average order value and average order frequency over the same period.

Furniture and mattresses are a growing category for Costco, up 2pp in GMV share in 2Q22 compared to 2Q20. The category is the fourth highest grossing for the retailer, with living room sales in particular driving sales.

At a subcategory level, sectional sofas lead with the largest share of living room GMV at Costco. Sofas, couches, and loveseats, however, grew their share of GMV the most in 2Q22 YoY at nearly 10pp. At a brand level, Gillman Creek, Abbyson Living and Thomasville are the most dominant brands in living room furniture.
