Bed Bath and Beyond cedes home decor dominance to Wayfair

Last year, Bed Bath and Beyond and Wayfair competed for the largest GMV share of home decor. However, since 2022, Wayfair has maintained strong home decor sales whereas Bed Bath & Beyond home decor sales have fallen by more than a third.

Wayfair is benefitting from Bed Bath and Beyond’s decline, whereas Overstock isn’t capitalizing on the retailer’s losses. Wayfair has captured an over 40% share of Bed Bath and Beyond customers’ wallets. Overstock’s wallet share of these same customers has instead fallen 6pp YoY in 3Q22.

This is a missed opportunity for Overstock as home decor is a vital category for the retailer. 22% of Overstock sales are from home decor products, whereas Wayfair’s sales, for example, come primarily from furniture.
