Third-Party Food Delivery: Q4 Update

With 2021 in the rearview, it’s time to evaluate winners and losers in the food delivery space. From a platform perspective, DoorDash still leads the pack with a wide margin over competitors Uber Eats and Grubhub. In Q4, DoorDash captured about 59% of all sales across the three platforms. Throughout the year, Uber Eats has shown some progress, rising from 28.4% in January 2021 to 31.5% in December and grabbing share from both DoorDash and Grubhub. Uber Eats is the winner in a few select markets, but DoorDash has maintained its dominance across much of the US.

YipitData also took a look at the top 100 merchants in terms of sales on third-party platforms. Only 30% of these 100 brands grew sales from Q3 to Q4. An evaluation of the top 10 growth brands demonstrates the evolution of these platforms, with the inclusion of virtual brands (MrBeast Burger), grocery (Safeway) and pet stores (PetSmart), alongside restaurants. Notable among these is Panera Bread, which saw the largest absolute growth quarter over quarter of any of the top 100 merchants.

Just outside of the top 10, DoorDash’s own quick convenience solution Dashmart saw nearly 12% growth quarter over quarter. In 2022, we can expect these platforms to continue to evolve as they seek to be the everything store for fast delivery.
